13/12/2007 - New Umpires Course - Malaga Province

FEDERACION ANDALUZA DE BOLOS

PRESS RELEASE : W/E 15 DECEMBER

NEW UMPIRES COURSE PROVES TO BE

A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

Under the guidance of Malaga Provincial Chairman, Geoff Land, a sub-committee was set up comprising Gordon Adams, John Carr, Murray Johns and John Owen. The objective was to review the structure of the Umpire’s Course, placing a greater emphasis on the practical side and thus reducing the written content of the final examination.

The revised format ensured Candidates attended three, 3 hour sessions where the Laws of Bowls were reviewed in detail and practical scenarios were set up to test their ability to react to “match situations”.

Unlike previous Courses, Candidates were not allowed to take a copy of the Laws into the Examination with them. This meant they had to have a sound knowledge of the Laws in order to pass the revised Examination which comprised of the following :-

-         A 20 question Written Paper to be completed in one hour

-         A 20 question “multiple-choice” Paper to be completed in 20 mins

-         A 20 minute “oral” examination

-         A Practical examination

Ten candidates attended the inaugural Course which was held at Santa Maria Bowls Club on the mornings of 16, 23 and 30 October with final Examination taking place on 13 November. Unfortunately Dine Warn, due to holiday commitments, has still to sit the final Examination but the six successful Candidates are :-

Bill Ogden,

 (Benavista)

Barry Pemberton,

 (Benavista)

John Howlett,

(Superbowl)

Marjorie Johns,

(Benalmadena)

Garry Aldridge,

 (Santa Maria)

Susan Walker,

(Los Amigos)

Bill, Barry, Garry and Marjorie all officiated at the Malaga Cup Competition along with Bill Callaway, Murray Johns, Geoff Land, Haydn Parker and Clive Thomas. Umpires give freely of their time and their help and assistance was once again greatly appreciated by both Players and the Federation’s Competition Committee.
