Following this year’s Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal,
there was a meeting of the Delegates of all the countries
represented to decide which country would host the next
Championship in 2013. Apart from Spain’s bid there was an
interest shown by Cyprus and Portugal.
This
Championship is one of the most prestigious events in the
Lawn Bowls calendar, and takes place every two years, and
this year there were 15 Countries taking part, which apart
from the individual countries in the U.K. included Germany,
Holland , Israel, Turkey, Cyprus, Switzerland, Portugal,
and, of course, Spain.
explained
the facilities that would be available if the event were to
be based around the Orihuela Costa area. The presence of
Tony Winterton, senior member of the Federation and
John Carr, the Malaga Delegate of the Adalucian
Bowling Federation, added weight to the
Spain bid.
The
professionalism of the bid was evident by the comments that
were made, and also the well prepared brochure, which not
only outlined the advantages to the bowling fraternity, but
also to Tourism, and the boost that it would give to the
local economy. Many thanks must go to the Leader for
undertaking the artwork of the brochure, and to Orihuela
Council for supplying publicity packs, both of which made an
impression on those attending.
Because of
the competence of the bid, the other two Candidate
countries withdrew their bids, and Spain was voted
unanimously as the host Country for the next Championships.
Speaking
afterwards, Sr. Boto stated that this would be the biggest
event ever undertaken within the Federation in all the 20
years that he has been President.
