27/03/2008 - Meeting of the Malaga Provincial Committee

Meeting of the Malaga Provincial Committee 27th March 2008

@ Santa Maria Bowls Club

Tony Winterton opened the meeting at 10.35am and apologies were read from Tony Frowd, Jimmy Chalmers, Trevor Burgin and Jim Neilson.

Present were;-

Ken McBride, Benavista

Geoff Wright, Los Amigos

Jimmy Taylor, Mijas

Murray Johns, Competition Committee

Diane Chambers, Secretary

    1)      Minutes of the meeting held on 10th January and matters arising

Jimmy Taylor repeated the query made by Clive Thomas at the last meeting about the corporate fee they were paying and Tony Winterton confirmed that the only alternative to the Corporate fee of 20€ for full members was individual Federation membership of 30€-

Diane Chambers said that Belplaya needed the statutes in Spanish to be signed by the Executive Committee, as these had been approved at their AGM.

Ken McBride and Geoff Wright queried some points in these statutes which Tony Winterton clarified for them to inform their members.

2)      Report on Andalucian Championships

Murray Johns reported that he and John Owen had been pleased with the overall success of the tournament which had been well supported with a high entry. There had been a few criticisms from Almeria which had been taken on board for the future, and there had been a minor problem with markers, but this was to be remedied by Umpires Association who planned to run courses at each of the clubs.

He personally thanked Santa Maria, Superbowl and Benavista Clubs for the help and support they had provided throughout the tournament.

3)      Report on National Championship Singles Qualifiers

Murray Johns stated that this had been completed successfully at Santa Maria Bowls Club and four Ladies and four men had qualified to represent Malaga at the National Championships in May.

There had been criticisms about the timing of the qualifiers held in January, but the Alicante qualifiers were not until April.

Diane Chambers felt that, if the qualifiers were held before the January closing date in all areas, it would result in a better entry.

4)      Summer Triples

At the last meeting it had been agreed that each club enter one team of four trips, however Bena Vista asked if the Committee would review that decision and allow them to enter two separate teams. It was clarified that these would be nominated teams and that once a member had played for one team he could not play for the other-

Diane Chambers and Jimmy Taylor both stated that their clubs were not in favour of two teams due to the extra traveling that this involved.

Murray asked the representatives to ask their Committees for another decision in view of these facts and report it to him by 1st April, but pointed out that he did not want to lose any of the other teams by a reversal of this decision.

5)      Team X1/ Kings cup

The winning team from the Malaga area would be eligible to play in this but, as yet; there was no reply from Alicante. The final was to be held in Malaga in September 2008.

6)      Tri Provincial

This was to be played at Indalo B.C. Almeria 5th/8th September 2008 and Murray Johns stated that he had only received an entry of one team from Santa Maria and he would send out another circular to all clubs with new criteria. The Mojacar Playa hotel had quoted 42€ double occupancy and 32€ single for bed and breakfast

Diane Chambers pointed out that the opening game must be against the two ‘away’ teams for the competition to be fair and Murray Johns agreed to contact Almeria and make this a criterion.

7)      National Squad

Tony Winterton announced that the National Squad would be sending ten men and ten ladies to play local bowlers on 1st and 2nd November 2008. The venue was still to be decided but the format would be rinks, trips, pairs and singles and local bowlers would be invited to make up the teams.

8)      Malaga Cup Proposals

a)      This would be open to Federated Bowlers in single sex formats of Singles, Pairs, Triples and Rinks and the winners will represent Malaga at the 2009 Nationals if the format changes.

b)      As Mijas B.C had dropped the Alan Spooner Competition, the dates 29th November to 11th December (Excluding the Friday League) would be used and would not be at the expense of the Owner’s Committee calendar.

A detailed circular, advising of the format, would be forthcoming from Murray Johns and sent to all the clubs and he would be grateful for any input on these proposals.

9)      Xmas Hamper

This would be played at Santa Maria on 13th December 2008 and would be open to federated bowlers. The format would be trips, as last year at Belplaya and a 3 x 8 end round robin, rinks to be drawn on day.

10)  National Championships 2009

Tony Winterton informed the Committee that he was working on the bid and that all greens would be vetted for venues under the new jurisdiction. Diane Chambers suggested the formation of Committees and Sub Committees if Malaga was successful

11, 12, 13) Champion of Champions

Although this year’s competitions would remain the same, there were proposals for future competitions that were to be covered by the notice that Murray Johns would be issuing to the clubs as covered in item 8.

14) Reminder of duties of Federation Representatives

a) Collecting fees

b) Controlling entry sheets for competitions, collecting entry fees and advising Competition Committee of entries before draw date.

c) Checking that entrants are Federated.

15) Responsibilities taken on by Provincial and Competition Committee

At the request of the Owner’s Committee, the Federation had taken over;-

a)      Presidents Fours.

This had been very successful with an entry of thirty two teams and had earned its place in the calendar. There had been some good matches although the final was marred by bad weather.

b)      League Cup

The final was to be played at Belplaya on Tuesday 1st April, although one finalist was still to be identified between the Superbowl/ Santa Maria game being played today.

16) AOB

Tony Winterton informed the Committee that the new bowling club at Ayamonte had extended an invitation to Costa del Sol bowlers to send a team to play them and reasonable accommodation was available at the local RIU Hotel.

After much discussion and because of the tight bowling calendar, it was decided to extend them an invitation to play on the Costa del Sol, a date to be agreed. Tony Winterton said he would be in touch. He also informed the Committee that the Federation membership in Malaga had increased by 25% giving us equal membership with other regions, a great improvement over the last three years.

17) Date of next meeting

This would be announced after the summer recess.
