Spanish National Championships - 2008

Planning for the 2008 Championships which will be held in South Alicante has already begun and the championship committee met for the first time on 9th July. At that meeting it was confirmed that  Monte Mar, Greenlands, Quesada, San Luis and La Siesta have all agreed to act as host clubs while La Marina have declined. The opening ceremony will take place at Quesada on Saturday 10th May. Monte Mar have already initiated arrangements for the appropriate additional car parking and spectator facilities with the local council and will host the finals and the closing ceremony. The dates allocated for play are 11th – 24th  May.

Having taken into account views which have been put to the National Executive of the Spanish Bowls Federation over the past few months, the format for the singles qualifying matches has being revised and will apply to all provinces. Numbers of qualifiers from each region will remain the same as in 2007. Each province will arrange their own qualifying tournaments which will take the form of an open draw of all entrants in each province, with matches to be played on dates and greens specified by each province’s committee. In South Alicante the mens singles will be played on 7, 8, 9, 10th April at San Luis and the ladies singles at Quesada over the same dates, with Monte Mar and Greenlands available if needed. The last date for entries will be 21st January 2008, while those entering will have to be be paid up Federation members by 1st February 2008.

The Leader newspaper will again publish the programme, which should be available in March 2008. Under the auspices of The Leader a website dedicated to the Nationals has been set up, www.spanishbowlsnationals.com , on which all matters relevant to the championships will be published as and when they are available. This will include rules, accommodation details, draws, location of venues, results, amended dress code and much more. All necessary information will also be sent directly to clubs and provincial delegates.
