It’s not long before the Nationals start properly north of Alicante. It is a bit disappointing that the numbers have fallen this time but understandable to a certain degree. Of course the Preliminary rounds of the Singles started a few months ago as the National Championship Committee tried to get the numbers down to the last 32. Inevitably not everyone was pleased in the way that it went. I have had quite a few phone calls but if you really want some notice taking of what you are saying please put it in writing to Graham or myself. Quite a few things have been changed over the last year nationally due to people bothering to put pen to paper. Shortly after the Nationals comes the National Champion of Champions Men’s and Ladies Pairs at Indalo BC from 2nd – 6th June 2007. By now if you have qualified for it, your Federation Delegate should have given you your Invitation from me to participate and also a set of Rules for the Competition. Don’t forget all entries have to be in by 9th May. The Invitations and Rules for the National Champion of Champion Men’s and Ladies Singles at Quesada 14th – 18th October 2007 will be coming out in June 2007. Again I have had a few phone calls on the subject of changing clubs and National Federation Competitions. If you change club and you entered the Nationals or a National Competition out of your previous club and you still want to participate in that competition then you have to play out of that club. After that competition/s over you then can start playing for your new club in Federation events so long as you let your Valencian / Andulucian Delegate know you have changed clubs and the two clubs concerned agree.
Dates for 2008 The Nationals will be starting on 11th May with the Opening Ceremony on 10th May. All should be over by 24th May. The National Champion of Champions Men’s and Ladies Pairs will be from 7th – 10th June. The National Champion of Champions Men’s and Ladies Singles will be from 12th – 15th October. Note that there are no venues specified so if you want your club to host one of these, please write to Sue Gell or Graham Marlow stating your case before 7th May. If you remember I said we were sending a team out to the European Championships in Cyprus this February and what a team it was. Playing Pairs and Singles against some of the top players from all over Europe, Pam and Nick Cole and Maggie Lawley and Jackie Breslin did Spain proud and came a superb THIRD. A great achievement and once again putting Spain right up there. Thanks also goes to National Coach, Iain Donaldson for all the advice and coaching he puts in. By the way, we wish him all the best for his hip operation he has this month. Ten Ladies and ten Men have been to Portugal to play in a Test Match, eight of them for the first time and they had a resounding win by 40 points to 24 points carrying on in the same vein as the success in the Europeans. The team for the Atlantic Championships in Ayr 13th – 22nd July has been announced. This is the first time Men have been invited to play. The team going to Scotland will be Nick Cole, Clive English, Mick Johnson, Keith Jones and Barry Latham, plus Pam Cole, Lynne Metcalfe, Sally Lewington, Maggie Holmes and Sheri Fletcher. I’m sure we all wish them the best of Spanish luck. It would seem that Spain will be well supported once again in Scotland as quite a few people have said they are coming along. So if you also want to turn up and shout and cheer we don’t mind. World Bowls January 2008 – as you can well imagine all the squad are on tenterhooks waiting to see who gets selected for the “Big One”. As soon as it is announced we will let you all know so you can book your holiday in New Zealand to go and support the team. Just before I finish Crystal Toleman has announced that she will be retiring from being the Valencian Delegate shortly. I would like to express not only my thanks but all the bowlers in Spain for the tremendous amount she has put in over all these years not only at Club level but very much so for National and International level. A great ambassador for bowls. Thank you. Happy Bowling, Barry Latham & Graham Marlow
