SUMMER LEAGUE TABLES

BENAVISTA’S SUPERB DOUBLE ONCE AGAIN

Benavista’s dominance of Summer Bowling within Malaga Province continued thanks to some exceptional “TEAM” performances. They only used 22 Bowlers and, unlike many of their opponents, were able to field unchanged Teams for most of the 10 weeks.

The KING’S CUP was the big prize this time around and this was the Competition in which their closest rivals from Superbowl fielded their strongest squad. Benavista will now represent our Province in the National Final which will, in 2008, be held at their own venue. The date has yet to be finalised but adequate notice will be given to ensure there is maximum support for our “local heroes”.

On Tuesday, 2 September a Presentation / Social Evening will be held in the Club House at Benavista to commemorate the Club’s success. A Buffet, at 5€ per head, will be provided and names / numbers of those wishing to attend should be submitted to the Club’s Captain, Dennis King ( Tel : 952896739 or 660460336 ), not later than 26 August. Details have been forwarded to the Clubs who participated in the Summer League but everyone is more than welcome to attend.

After losing the first match of the campaign the League Champions never looked back and were comfortable winners in their remaining fixtures. In the 10-3 win over Superbowl it was “business as usual” for Neil Marshall, Sandy Guthrie & Aussie King and Frances Farmer partnering Ken & Jill McBride, both Teams having excellent wins.

In the other games Barry Pemberton, Bill Ogden & Roy Wilkins were held 18-18 in a thrilling game against Roger Sutton, John Cornwell & John Hawkins with Superbowl’s solitary success coming from Ronnie Lamb, Paul Brown & Miles Atkinson (playing his first League game).

Mijas concluded their Summer Season with a comfortable aggregate win at Belplaya. Once again the match was played at Los Amigos and 11 of the Team were from that Club. Dudley Calder, Dorothy Pilmoor & Geoff Edginton were 22-12 winners and their other success came from Diane Chambers, Dorrien Ives & Magda Walek who came from 19-14 down at 13 ends to defeat Don Smith, Ron Cole & Ray Yeates 22-20 in a close fought game. The other two games were comfortable wins for Mijas through Jim Taylor, Christine Taylor & Angela John and the formidable Team of Pam Cole, Chris Sims & Eileen White.

A 5-0 victory for Superbowl at Benalmadena was essential and they needed Belplaya to defeat Benavista 4-1. In the end neither happened and both Clubs were happy to settle for 3-2 wins against their lowly opponents who pushed them all the way on the night.

Benavista’s three successes came in the Singles and Triples. Wendy Pemberton made it two years unbeaten when she overcame Diane Chambers 21-10, Roy Wilkins came from behind to beat Geoff Edginton 21-16 and the “dream Triple” of Neil Marshall, Sandy Guthrie & Aussie King ended their excellent Summer campaign with an emphatic 28-4 win.

Belplaya were deprived of the services of many experienced Bowlers, but they did achieve convincing wins, against experienced opposition, in the Pairs and Fours with Susan Walker & Dorothy Pilmoor and John Walker, John Newton, James Monteith & Geoff Wright winning 26-13 and 25-17 respectively.

In the other match it looked at one stage of the evening as if the 5-0 scoreline might be in favour of Benalmadena. Mary Detheridge and Terry Barrett were both 16-9 down in their Singles games before they rallied strongly in the latter stages. Mary defeated Kate Morris 21-20 and Terry won the last 5 ends to beat Norman Smithson 21-19. Mike Detheridge, Craig Lewis & Shirley Owen, this time playing with Carole Cornwell, maintained their 100% record in the Kings Cup but they needed to “dig deep” and came from 16-13 down by winning the last 5 ends.

Benalmadena’s two wins came in the Pairs and Triples. Alan Page & Jim Neilson won in convincing style 25-7 but the Triples was a real “cliffhanger” and Marjorie Johns, Marion Allen & Amber Dineen just held on to register an 18-17 victory over Ronnie Lamb, John Cornwell & Maureen Barrett.
