WALL TO WALL SUNSHINE AT MIRAFLORES OPEN!

The Miraflores Open which started on 11th November reached its climax on Sunday 19th November with all of the finals in the different disciplines being contested. We had been blessed with warm sunny conditions throughout the event, which proved again to be the largest of its kind on the Costa del Sol with around 330 entries in total, as a result all 16 rinks were in use on a number of occasions. We were lucky to have 2 major sponsors supporting the event in Ibex Insurance and Currencies Direct which enabled the finalists to receive ample prizes.

During the week we witnessed many epic battles across all disciplines. As always we had a large crowd of spectators in attendance both during the week and on finalís day.

This year we had a new event in place, the Open Fours (which replaced the singles we had run in previous years), the event attracted a very large entry of 25 teams and was considered a real success. In the final we had Chris Down, Tommy Smith, Val Lewis and Brenda Collier against the team of  Craig & Sandra Lewis, Mike Goodwin and Trevor Burgin. Craigís team got off to a good start winning the first 3 ends but Chrisís team fought back winning 4 of the next 5 ends until disaster struck when they dropped 5 shots on the 9th end. They were never able to fight back from that eventually conceding the match and the title with the score 20-8 after 16 ends.

The Mixed Triples event, which had seen at least one match go to an extra end and many others decided on the last end on the way to the final. The final was contested between Barbara & Tony Land and Frank Ball against Brian Todd, Lennie & Amber Dineen. The game saw many twists and turns with the lead changing hands a number of times in the early part of the game. Brianís team had a winning spell in the middle of the game to establish a 15-5 lead after 14 ends. Barbaraís team won 3 of the last 4 ends but were unable to catch up. The final score being 18-13 to Brian, Lennie & Amber.

In the Mixed Pairs the contestants were Malcolm Greenwood & Wendy Pemberton against Pat Baker & John Pearce. This format was played in sets and during the week we had many matches that needed an extra ends playoff to determine the winner. Both teams had been in great form all week. Pat & John won the first set comfortably and despite a scare near the end of the second set, won reasonably comfortably to take the title.

Following the finalís Grant the organiser made a brief speech thanking the sponsors Ibex Insurance & Currencies Direct together with players, spectators, umpires and especially Heather & her team for keeping everybody fed and watered throughout the competition. The permanent trophies, cash prizes and wine were presented to the winners and runnerís up by Elaine from Ibex Insurance   and by Jennifer from Currencies Direct.  Lennie made a short speech on behalf of the competitors thanking everyone involved, particularly Grant & Carol for yet another efficient and well run competition which was met with warm applause by the gathered multitude.

This year there was also a special presentation of wine and flowers to Derek & Pam Shemmings as a thank you for all they have done for bowls in general and Miraflores in particular over the last 30 years.

A feature of the Miraflores Open has always been the scorecard draw which takes place on the final day with prizes donated from local businesses, this year was no exception with prizes donated by the sponsors and local restaurants: Miraflores Golf Club, Marbella Golf Club, Los Porches, Biddy Mulligans, El Gusto, Sai and El Olivo all of which will no doubt be put to good use!

With this the week drew to a close and the assembled throng slowly dispersed, hoping to return next year.
