South Alicante Bowling Alliance, (SABA)

Three Day Midsummer Mixed Triples Tournament

June 2008- Monte Mar BC

Report  & photos by John Moss.

Our second SABA the three day Mid Summer Mixed Triples tournament sponsored by Offshore Money Managers, was held at Monte Mar Bowls Club on 14th, 15th and 16th June 2008.  The weather was superb, along with the bowling.

The eventual winners of each group were, Anne Holland, Jim Mulloy with Ray Pollock, Ann and Maurice Horswell with Colin Lingren, both of these teams were from Emerald Isle.  Jean Cooper, Mal Broughton with Peter Hutton from La Siesta, and from Monte Mar Bill and June Young with Dave Melville who just pipped the San Luis team of Mal Hughes, Mary and John Moss, both of these teams having eight points, the same number of shots but Bill’s team won eight ends in his last game to Mal’s seven.

Jean Cooper’s team played Bill Young’s team in the final with both teams producing some superb bowling with Bill pulling away from the start but, Jean’s team coming back strongly in the latter stages.  On the 11th end the score was eight shots to Jean and nine to Bill. Jean was holding enough shots to win and Bill came in with his last wood to make it ten shots to eight and win the tournament.

This year we decided to present white polo shirts to the winners and runners up along with the usual cash sponsorship from OMM.  These shirts will be the first to sport the new SABA logo on them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Monte Mar Bowls Club for all the help they gave over the weekend, this includes the ladies who sold raffle tickets, and they did really well.

On a serious note I would like to send the best wishes from the SABA committee and all its members to Barry Woodvine, who as many will know bowls with the aid of a walking stick, unfortunately he fell over on the green on the Sunday and broke his leg.  He was taken to hospital where his leg was set, he is now at home and has to take things easy.  Get well soon Barry and we all hope to see you on the green very soon.

The presentation was made by Mick Farrelly - Chairman of Monte Mar Bowls Club, David Wallace Powell representing Offshore Money Managers, and John Meadows President of SABA

Our next big SABA event is the Finals weekend at San Luis Bowls Club on  13th, 14th and 15th September 2008, this again is sponsored by OMM, and we look forward to seeing as many people as possible to support the players.
