On Saturday 29th March, Benitachell Bowls Club was
host to 96 invited bowlers from throughout the Costa Blanca,
plus numerous other visitors and guests, in a day to mark the
anniversary of the death of B.B.C. member Marilyn Johnson.
The bowls format of three six-end triples matches, each with
different drawn teams seeded to give all an equal chance in
accordance with Marilyn’s wish, gave the bowlers and spectators
ample time to enjoy the numerous side stalls and attractions.
The unexpectedly fine weather was a welcome bonus.
The results of various competitions, including the fiendish
“Colourful Quiz” that has been taxing folk throughout the Costa
and beyond in recent weeks, were given by the chairman of the
organising committee Harry Winfield. Whilst some funds are still
to come, including bids for two Newcastle United football shirts
signed by all the players – ring Harry on 966490227 if you are
interested – he was able to announce that the total sum raised
for Leukaemia Research, including a generous donation from Javea
Cancer Care, stood at just over eight and a half thousand euros.
Some of the many members of Marilyn’s family who had travelled
from the UK to attend then presented the superb prizes that they
had provided for the bowling event, including magnificent
engraved crystal bowls for the winners and runners-up.
The day
was completed with excellent tapas courtesy of the Johnson
family – a day thoroughly enjoyed by all. Many thanks to the
sponsors and to all who participated and contributed to this
fitting tribute to a wonderful lady.
