This year’s event produced some of the finest bowling but you
would expect that with so many International players
participating, this year we had more teams wearing special
coloured tops which enhanced the show piece and made recognition
of who’s who easier for the spectators.
The
wearing of coloured club tops has now been passed by the Costa
Blanca Bowling Association which is a massive step forward and
should make next season’s league games more spectacular.
A
big thank you must go to the sponsors Bancaja Habitat who have
been involved since the conception of the competition 3 years
ago.
After 3 great days bowling we got down to the nitty gritty, the
envelopes with the euros in, the semi finals. The first semi
between Tony McKenna’s triple and that of Yvonne Briden probably
produced the biggest surprise with Yvonne winning comfortably
17---7, not that some people did not expect them to win but the
majority favouring Tony’s team. The other game was between
Russell Marks and Dot North, wonderful to see her back bowling
and to a good standard, Russell got of to a good start leading
5—1 after 4 ends but the team of Dot North, Barry Elms and skip
Alex Fisher won the next 3 ends to lead 6---5. The lead changed
twice more before Russell eventually won 12—9.
Russell again got off to a flyer in the final leading 6—0 after
3 ends, but as in his semi, the opposition staged a comeback
winning the next 4 ends to lead 8---6, however a strange
decision by Yvonne in the next end resulted in Russell scoring a
5 and despite losing a 3 at the next end scored another 5 to
lead 16—11 with 2 ends to play. Yvonne scored 2 singles to
finish 16—13 down.
A
very eventful final one way or another.
The
winning triple of Alan Bowen, Malcolm Dupuis and Russell Marks
received 1800€ for their endeavours, the finalists Yvonne
Browne, John Rawlings and Yvonne Briden received 600€ and the
semi finalist 300€. The trophy was presented to the winners by
Brian Pocock, President of the Costa Blanca Bowling Association.
