Yet another innovative bowls tournament from Bowls Algarve, this
time an Australian pairs competition, played at Alvor from
Tuesday 22nd April through to finals day on Saturday
26th.
This new format involves the lead playing two bowls, then the
skip plays four bowls, followed by the lead playing the last two
bowls. The roles being reversed for the next end and so on. The
tournament was played in glorious weather throughout and the
Alvor green played beautifully, a tribute to the hard working
groundsman John Palinski.
Twenty pairs took part, divided into five groups of four, each
team playing the other three in the group, the five winners and
three best runners up advancing to the quarter finals. The group
matches were played through Tuesday and Wednesday. Friday
morning saw some exciting and skilful bowling as the knockout
stages commenced. All four quarter finals were close fought
encounters.Paul Johnson and Cath Webb beat Alan and Janice
Clarke 22-18 on the last end, Paula and Seamus Montgomery saw
off the challenge of John Denn and David Laing by 23-18, John
and Chris Laskey narrowly defeated Graham and Joan Worrall 17-14
and finally Sheila and John Currall beat Jan McGlynn and David
Berbridge by 22-16. The semi – finals took place on Saturday
morning when Johnson and Webb defeated the Montgomerys 27-10
whilst the Laskeys beat the Curralls by 26-10.
In an very competitive and hard fought final that afternoon,
John and Chrissie Laskey maintained their impressive record in
competitions this season by taking the title, beating Paul and
Cath by 20-10. Sheila and John Currall won the third and
fourth place play off, beating Paula and Seamus Montrgomery by
24-10. A plate competition was run in conjunction with the main
event, for the 12 teams not qualifying for the quarter-finals.
This proved to be equally popular and competitive. Jack Pendley
and Tom Edwards eventually taking the title by defeating Alan
and Frances Reynolds 15-13.
All in all, a highly successful tournament which we hope to
repeat next season, only bigger and even better. Our grateful
thanks to Bowtech for their generous sponsorship, especially to
Patrick and Gareth who came along to see the action on finals
day and kindly presented the prizes. Thanks also to Connie and
John at the Alvor Club for hosting the event and providing such
wonderful catering throughout.
