Hong Kong

March 2008

Good showing by Spain in Hong Kong

Four members of the Spanish national bowls squad arrived in Hong Kong last week to take part in 3 tournaments there and in China. The first event was the HCFC International mixed fours, for which our men teamed up with ladies from Hong Kong. The teams in which Fred Roberts and Brian Manser played both made it through to the quarter finals, where both lost, although Brian's side went out to the English team which was the eventual winner.

Next up was the Tiger Bowls International tournament, in which 78 teams competed. Fred and Brian were back with team mates John Muldoon and Malcolm Greenwood for this one and they did pretty well, coming 17th overall. They only missed out on progressing to the quarter finals by a single point. This week the four are playing in the China Open International bowls tournament.

Spanish team just miss out in China

Spain's bowls team which played in the China Open last week gave another good showing, but just missed out on going through to the knockout stages. The four men, Fred Roberts, Malcolm Greenwood, John Muldoon and Brian Manser, did not have the best of starts in their group, losing to Scotland and the Philippines on the first day. Things turned round completely on day 2 and they won all of their games, against Japan, China and Cyprus.

A win over eventual winners Australia on day 3 (the only time that Australia lost), left them needing to win the last match, against Happy Valley (Hong Kong), to progress to the quarter finals. Sadly they lost that encounter, but even so, gave another good account of themselves, as in the previous two tournaments they took part in in Hong Kong.
