The annual Open Tournament for the Basil Withers-Cabrera Cup took place on Thursday 6th & Friday 7th March on the two grass greens of the Cabrera Club in Turre. Forty-eight mixed pairs were involved over the two days in good weather. The participants were drawn into eight groups of six teams, every team playing all the other teams in their group. The group winners went forward to the quarter-finals, which together with the semi-finals and final was played on the Friday afternoon in front of a good number of supporters. The semi-finals comprised representatives from Indalo and Almeria Bowling Clubs plus two teams from the host club Cabrera. Some very consistent bowling by the visiting teams disposed of the host club representatives of Dave Jenkins & Chris Risby, and David & Margaret Schofield. The final between Mo & Alan De-Boer of Indalo and Patsy & Roy Tonkin of Almeria seemed to be going the way of the Indalo pair until the closing ends when the Tonkins managed to come back with some big scores to take the rewards. Cash prizes were awarded to the quarter-finalists, semi-finalists and finalists; the winning pair collecting €200.
A
very successful tournament was due to all those who helped in
any way, including the bar staff, the caterers, the greens staff
and those who organised the raffle. The Cabrera Club also wishes
to again thank all those who supported this event and made it
the success it was. |
