4/12/2011 - World Champion of Champions and Classic Pairs Tournament - Jim Neilson

Just arrived back from Hong Kong after doing my umpiring/marking duty at last month's World Champion of Champions and Classic Pairs tournament where I had the pleasure of marking & umpiring a couple of the matches involving Keith & Val. Through your column I would like to say that Keith did Spain proud by coming through a difficult qualifying section that included Scotland, England & New Zealand where his win over the English champion was memorable. In the semi final he took Scotland's Jonathan Ross to a tie break and was very unlucky not to make the final. Val was so unlucky to have been drawn in the most competitive section and found the very tricky grass greens difficult that were made more difficult with the unseasonal rainfall. She stayed on to play in the Classic Pairs with one of the local bowlers as her partner but again the weather and the heavier grass greens did not suit her. Off the green both were a credit to Spanish bowling and apart from me were well supported by their respective spouses and Keith's daughter.
