Hi John,

In my opinion common sense goes a long way in answering  the point made by your correspondent. A sports club is a legal entity in its own right . As such the discrimination laws apply within the club, outside the club but not at its door.

In other words within the club you can not discriminate against members  e.g. by saying that a lady can not be the club captain. Similarly you can not discriminate if you are dealing with persons outside the club who you wish to EMPLOY, e.g. a gardener or bartender. But when it comes to admitting new members a club is in the same position as any householder who does not have to admit everyone who knocks on his door even if he wishes to pay for the privilege.

Regards,

Tony.
