02/10/2009 - Phil Lock - National Championships. |

From an onlookers viewpoint, the recent national championships were an absolute disgrace. It would appear that 'political gain' seems to have been more important, than the championships themselves. It doesn't need a degree in rocket science to arrange the nationals over a period, that doesn't conflict with any other important event/s taking place, ie, SABA finals and the Valencian Iberian Open. Surely in future, the people who all put a lot of time and effort into organising these tournaments can all get together, and make certain it does not happen again.
I know from past experiences, that a
lot of expense deters bowlers from travelling to other areas, to
play in the nationals, but i have to aggree that the central
region of South Alicante, is probably the most suitable to hold
such a prestigious event, and they do do
it well.
I also notice that there are now two
umpiring bodies, namely the CBUMA, and the newish Malaga region
umpires. Perhaps some amalgamation into a national 'Spanish
Bowls Umpires Association' is not beyond the realms of
possibility, with perhaps four separate areas, ie Costa Del Sol,
Almeria, South Alicante and North Alicante forming a national
umbrella. This is how it's done in the UK, and it works
perfectly.
These are purely my own views, but i
hope they give food for thought.

Weymouth, sometimes)
