04/09/2009 - Pete Bonsor - Appointment in Australia & The Premier League

Hi,

For all of the bowlers out there that do not know already. I can confirm I have been offered a position in Australia at Towradgi Bowling club NSW as there bowls co-ordinator. Those of you who have visited Oz will realise what this position involves and how serious bowls is out there. For those who have not visited Oz the role is very much akin to being Fixture sec, Competition sec, social sec, Vice Captain and coach all rolled into 1 “OH” and you have to play 3 times a week for the club whilst being paid!!

I wish everyone continued success while playing bowls wherever you may be and I would like to thank everyone who helped me towards getting this position I could not have done it without you. A special thank you to Bill Pain, Eve Blyth, Del & Avril Toozer, Rosemary Cairns, Angela Goodfellow, all the members of Greenlands and The National Squad.

Before I go I would like to leave the bowlers of the CBBA with the following,

My suggestions for an alternative to the Winter League  NOT ANOTHER 3 WOOD TRIPLES LEAGUE!!

THE PREMIER LEAGUE

(These are my suggestions and not the suggestions of Greenlands and are based around the quality of this type of league as run Down under).

1. The 7,10 or 12 day rule what ever it has become would need to be retracted in order to maximize the number of players eligible to join in the new league. If this rule is not retracted then the old rule of a club with more than 40 members must submit a team to the Premier League before they can enter a Southern / Northern league team needs to be reintroduced. Removing both (which would be my choice providing stronger Southern / Northern league teams and being a lot easier to police) or applying both would create a fairer league structure in all leagues as clubs would not be able to load their Southern league teams with their stronger bowlers against clubs whose members wanted to enjoy the real two wood game of bowls
THE PREMIER LEAGUE

2. The teams will be open with no stipulations on Male or Female participants

3. The league(s) would be better if the number of rinks per team was 3 with no friendlies this allows for a manageable squad size of appox 15 people. A club entering 2 teams would then be playing 24 people per week (equivalent to an extra Southern / Northern league game including 2 friendlies.)

4. For clubs entering more than 1 team it may be possible to have 2 teams at home on any one match day giving a great atmosphere especially when the season is concluding, this also allows a club to enter up to 4 teams and still be able to play all the fixtures in the Mornings.

5. The end of season
could involve a playoff weekend where the top 6 clubs play off to decide a winner akin to the Super league and Premier league Rugby.

6. The North and South could have a play-off as per the Kings Cup providing both regions adopt the same format and play a similar amount of games.

7. This new PREMIER LEAGUE would in this or a very similar format remove all the current obstacles preventing clubs from playing in the Winter league i.e. finance, traveling and restricting players to 1 game a week.

8. This would be a permanent league run during the Winter months but I am sure it's success will develop into a Summer equivalent and eventually a genuine Reformed COSTA BLANCA SUPER LEAGUE involving as many teams as possible from all over the Costa playing in an unrestricted competition. This will possibly happen when the economic climate returns to a manageable level.

9. A full list of rules would need to be worked out prior to commencement.

These are my ideas please comment as you wish.

Pete Bonsor (BONZA)

Thank you all once again.
