16/08/2007 - Harry Winfield Replies to Jim Neilson on Umpiring |
|
|
I was somewhat surprised to
read Jim Neilson's comments on Umpiring
and Marking. Though he does admit that he has done little or no
Umpiring here in Spain.
I am sure that if Jim would like to learn
more about courses for both Markers and Umpires here in Spain
then please find out who your club delegate is to the C B U M A
( Costa Blanca Umpires & Markers Association) and they will be
able to give him all the information he requires).
A copy of the C B U MA constitution should be
available from the same delegate.
In that constitution you will see that
qualified Umpires from other countries are welcome as Honorary
members, and the majority of these Honorary members have elected
to attend the next course available in their area to become full
members of the C B U M A .
I am sure you will find that here in Spain
lots of Bowlers take up the game in their latter years and with
the rapid growth of new clubs there is a
need for competent Markers & Umpires.
The courses here in Spain are different, in
that with the Markers the emphasis is on the practical side
including how to measure but also how to work in harmony with
the duty Umpire and what steps to take if an Umpire is not
present. Of course a rudimentary knowledge of the Laws of the
Game of Bowls in Spain and importantly the Rules & Conditions of
any Competition that they are involved in is essential.
I am the co-founder of the C B U M A and was
the President for many years, I am still a member of the
committee and one of the Instructors of both courses and any
updating sessions the C B U M A deem necessary. I could not be
more prouder of the work done over the years to promote the
future of Bowls in Spain especially in the field of Marking &
Umpiring.
Ask any of the Markers Or Umpires in your &
any neighbouring clubs and they will tell
you that "Big H" is not an ogre but will always help anyone
wherever I can. I do hope we get to meet after the summer
recess, Jim I welcome the chance to chat . I was a friend of the
late Clive Brindle of Indalo Club and before a bowler of some
substance in Hong Kong, I do hope you had the opportunity to
know him.
By the way, if you need a copy of the latest
Laws of the Game your delegate should have copies.
All bowlers look out for the next opportunity
to take the Markers Course and then later the Umpires course.
My best wishes to all my friends, and those I've
yet to meet,
Harry Winfield. Benitachell Bowls Club.
