15/07/2007 - Mike Fairburn Replies to Keith Williams on Spanish Participation |

I refer to the message by Keith Williams re participation of Spanish Nationals in the sport of bowls. I have been involved in the administration of two clubs in the Almeria region and believe me we have tried very hard to get Spaniards interested in the sport. At both La Mata and the Indalo bowling clubs we have advertised free open days for Spanish Nationals with coaches available to give an introduction to the game the response was to say the least disappointing. Having spoken to Spaniards it would appear that (a) the game is too slow for their tastes, (b) it is played mostly by ex Commonwealth countries and English speaking at that and I have to say from my own experience few clubs have fluent Spanish speaking members giving the Spaniards a feeling of isolation. Lastly if the sport had Olympic status then that might wake up several countries where bowls is not played. Yours Mike Fairburn. |
